+ SPEAKING OF SIESTAS!
{ Pictured: Ulysses resting from his little kitty journey. DeNitto © 2006 } A siesta /siːˈɛstə/, original Spanish pronunciation [ˈsjesta] is a short nap taken in the early afternoon, often after the midday meal. Such a period of sleep is a common tradition in some hot countries. The word siesta is Spanish, from the Latin hora sexta - "the sixth hour" (counting from dawn, therefore noon, hence "midday rest").At SPM the true definition is taken a bit further. If a nap is not possible, but there is enough time allowed for any other type of break, it is strongly encouraged to take advantage of that precious moment. As long as the mind and body can rest for a short period as often as possible during the work week, it can only enhance the quality of living.
Each month, learn more facts about SIESTAS and how you may benefit from taking them into your daily routine.
Below are June's SIESTA FACTS:
WARNING ABOUT NAPS???
As the UK celebrated the third National Siesta Day in June of 2008, this year would have marked the fourth year-- if it were not CANCELLED! Apparently, according to new research studies, there may be a link between napping and Diabetes Type 2 and they felt it necessary to cancel this year until further studies can reveal otherswise. From the words on their site, they feel that it
is a "slight" link. In any case, it is worth looking into with a scientific approach. Read through the link below for more details.

+ TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS
STORE RETURNS
It happens to everyone from time to time. You make an average purchase, take it home or to the office before realizing that it's not going to work out. For whatever the reason may be, it's incredibly helpful to leave the receipt for that questionable purchase IN YOUR WALLET for at least a week or until you have decided to return that items. When it comes time to physically take the item back to the store, you will not ever have to comb through papers on your desk or dresser, (or if you are more organized, your receipt pouch!) and it will be really simple and quick to get your refund or make your exchange. For those questionable purchases, it's always a wise idea to also have the original bag and then keep the return in your vehicle so it's with you when you have a chance to return it-- preferably when you are near that side of town, in order to save more time, as well as gas.

+ SPECIAL FEATURE OF THE MONTH
JUNE IS NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH
With June being National Safety Month, it makes the perfect time for everyone to take several simple safety precautions in their homes. This is a good time to check
smoke and carbon dioxide detectors and air filters, etc. It's also a good time to
give reminders to friends and family members to drive safely.
After a recent personal experience with a brown recluse spider, it may even be a good time to clean behind appliances and beds and clear out dark closets, attics or basements to prevent anything from physical injuries, dangerous mold growths and creature infestations, whether it be insects or spiders or rodents.
Take your vehicle to the shop to have a safety inspection for anything like hoses, tire treads, lubrications, etc.
Importantly, with this month becoming full of summer heat, is also helpful to check on elders to make sure that they have proper cooling and ventilation in their homes, particularly if they are choosing to live alone. It's best to have someone inspect their homes for the summer months to see that they are not losing any cool air or that the air units are working properly. Along with a home inspection, another thoughtful approach would be to check on an elder bringing a portable fan, two to three water sprayer bottles and a stack of washcloths and hand towels. If they do not have air conditioning, the fan can be kept where the sit and the spray bottles can help keep them cool if they use them to spray their upper body. The cloths and towels can be kept in bowls of cool water for them to wipe with, which also helps with cooling. Make sure that they understand to keep hydrated and that you also bring clean fresh drinking water and place in their refrigerator. Along with what you bring, it's what you say in order to remind them of the importance of keeping cool in summer heat. Leave your phone number with them so that they can call on you if they begin to feel too uncomfortable so that you or someone else can check on them.
In the website below, the mission statement for the National Safety Council is as follows:
>> The National Safety Council saves lives by preventing injuries and deaths at
work, in homes and communities, and on the roads, through leadership, research,
education and advocacy. <<
