+ SPEAKING OF SIESTAS!

A siesta /siːˈɛstə/, original Spanish pronunciation [ˈsjesta] is a short nap taken in the early afternoon, often after the midday meal. Such a period of sleep is a common tradition in some hot countries. The word siesta is Spanish, from the Latin hora sexta - "the sixth hour" (counting from dawn, therefore noon, hence "midday rest").

At SPM the true definition is taken a bit further. If a nap is not possible, but there is enough time allowed for any other type of break, it is strongly encouraged to take advantage of that precious moment. As long as the mind and body can rest for a short period as often as possible during the work week, it can only enhance the quality of living.

Each month, learn more facts about SIESTAS and how you may benefit from taking them into your daily routine.

Below are April's SIESTA TIPS/FACTS:

WARM ORANGE IN THE BEDROOM

Though the colour orange can certainly be too bright in many cases, if used appropriately, a toned-down hue can be relaxing when used in a bedroom. Below are three examples of orange being used in bedrooms creating warmth and comfort.

First, let's go with the NOT RECOMMENDED!

If making any considerations about using orange in your bedroom, it's a good idea to view the many variations and collect samples of hues from paint stores to get a better idea of what would work, whether it be painting the walls, investing in new furniture or simply accenting with pillows, linens or vases and bowls. The two links below show the many variations of orange.

+ TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS

BREAKFAST ON THE RUN?

As long as we are talking about food...

Are your mornings too hurried? Are you or your family members missing out on the recommended healthy breakfast due to a morning too rushed from missing the alarm, not having backpacks or briefcases ready or not even being able to decide or find parts to the outfit that was to be worn for the day?

It can certainly help if you can make new habits of preparing for your mornings the evening before. With a few simple steps below, you and other members of your household can find a more productive morning.

All of these simple tasks can be accomplished in a relatively short amount of time the evening before:

> Lay out your outfit or uniform including whatever accessories are necessary.

> Check the calendar for all expectations of the next day. Is there anything special that must be brought to school, work or for extra-curricular activities or exercise? Are their any special appointments during the school or work day that would require leaving earlier than usual?

> For school backpacks, have the kids get into the habit of packing up their homework, once completed, into their backpacks, which are waiting by the door, ready to leave the next day.

> For briefcases, complete any work brought home and then return it to the briefcase, rather than leaving it on a desk. Keep the briefcase in the same location each day so that it's easy for a quick departure.

> Parents can write any notes for school or doctors, etc. and pack them into the backpacks or lunchboxes to be delivered by kids when necessary.

> Set the table for breakfast, including what items you may need, such as the sugar bowl for coffee.

> Any healthy foods that can be prepared the night before saves time in the morning-- tasks such as slicing an orange!

Also, it can be helpful to have a large calendar, (whether it be paper, a bulletin board style or magnetic dry erase,) to have on hand so that each morning on the way out, it is checked. Such a calendar can be in addition to one used on a phone or computer. A large calendar is particularly nice for kids who like visual reminders with colour coding. One style that was used daily when my kids were teenagers is in the link below. As it was a nice strong magnetic dry erase board, it was attached to the metal door of our Manhattan apartment where it couldn't be missed. They were able to add events to the calendar in addition to what I had already listed. It is a great way to have everyone in one household communicate and know where someone was located at any given time.

MAGNETIC CALENDAR

Keeping the charm of the morning is key. No one enjoys a hectic beginning to what can be a long day. A morning of chaos can lead to a less productive day and can ultimately lead to stress, frustration, missed deadlines or appointments and sometimes make the hours quite miserable. Many are known to find headaches creep up on them early in the day due to a morning too rushed without proper nourishment and peace. A leisurely start with wholesome food and a moment to enjoy the calmness of the morning is a far better way to end up with a good day at work or school.

+ MOM TIME

FORWARD: A note from SPM MOM...

During the early 1990's, as a mother raising two children through their first years, I now learn of many new products that are thrilling to me, even with my empty nest. I often find myself wishing that some of them were available as long ago as 24 years! Below are neat links and ideas to products or educational items currently on today's market for parents to explore for their children-- babies through college and beyond!

CITRUS KIDS

Kids love to pretend and a great way for them to enjoy themselves without too much of a mess is to encourage them through realistic educational toys. With the orange theme for this month, some cute food play sets and games are found in the links below. As a mother, I always wanted to allow my kids the time to be creative while keeping messes to a minimum.
