+ SPEAKING OF SIESTAS!

{ Pictured: Ulysses resting from his little kitty journey. DeNitto © 2006 }

A siesta /siːˈɛstə/, original Spanish pronunciation [ˈsjesta] is a short nap taken in the early afternoon, often after the midday meal. Such a period of sleep is a common tradition in some hot countries. The word siesta is Spanish, from the Latin hora sexta - "the sixth hour" (counting from dawn, therefore noon, hence "midday rest").

At SPM the true definition is taken a bit further. If a nap is not possible, but there is enough time allowed for any other type of break, it is strongly encouraged to take advantage of that precious moment. As long as the mind and body can rest for a short period as often as possible during the work week, it can only enhance the quality of living.

Each month, learn more facts about SIESTAS and how you may benefit from taking them into your daily routine.

Below are February's SIESTA TIPS/FACTS:

SLEEP GUIDE MAY HELP

The link below takes you directly to an eight page PDF Sleep Guide. Page seven is particularly helpful with tips that have been pointed out over and over through the last five years in which Siesta Magazine has run! It certainly doesn't hurt to have another reminder. The guide begins with bed and mattress sizing and comfort levels, which are very important. In many cases of night sleep deprivation, the problem may simply be solved by purchasing a new mattress or pillow.

+ TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS

'Stillllllll Got snow... AND now ice, tooooo????

January was fulllll of snow and February brings in a fresh supply of more snow... but more problematic, ice. Between having just the weight of so much unmelted snow, only to have ice adding to that weight, it can cause not only a higher level of inconvenience, but a situation of danger.

It's one thing to have to dig a car out from loads of snow, but to remove snow from a house is another challenge entirely. If you find yourself seriously concerned about the weight of snow and ice on your rooftop, please read through the link below!

+ MOM TIME

FORWARD: A note from SPM MOM...

During the early 1990's, as a mother raising two children through their first years, I now learn of many new products that are thrilling to me, even with my empty nest. I often find myself wishing that some of them were available as long ago as 24 years! Below are neat links and ideas to products or educational items currently on today's market for parents to explore for their children-- babies through college and beyond!

!LUNCH NOTES!

When my kids were growing up, they often took their own lunches, safely packed with cute fruit shaped ice coolers with various healthy foods organized in fun coloured containers with tightly snapping lids. Packing the foods and ensuring that the beverages would not leak became a routine that was down to an absolute science. But, as a mother concerned not only about the lunchess and the general days in school, but also concerned about the hours following a school day, it also became a routine to send notes in the lunchbox for each of my children to read. I slipped notes in their lunches, rather than in their backpacks-- because as every mother learns, this is a very likely place that they will actually find such a note and have a moment to read it as they sip and chew.

A strong case of teaching TIME MANAGEMENT in a fun way!

This routine became quite helpful in reminding them not to linger after school if there was an immediate trip to the orthodontist after the carpool line. It was also a way to give friendly reminders about remembering to bring home all of their homework assignments, books and... well... the lunchbox, itself. Slipping in notes was also a way to communicate during school, as no cell phones were allowed, much less owned by kids during their early years. It was a way to help them remember that the days sometimes didn't end at the dismissal bell at school when our car would zip across town for ballet, choir, piano, fencing, chess or drama and that eating well during lunch would keep them going until they would see my vehicle arrive with a refrigerator full of afternoon snacks.

Those notes would save-the-day in many cases. Whether it was simply to wish them well on a test, remind them of a dental appointment, a rehearsal, a party or a simple *thinking of you* message, those notes were quite helpful and hopefully, the tradition will be carried down with their children some day.

Another great part of the lunch notes was that they were completely RECYCLED!

Notes were created using

> old greeting cards
> festive prints cut from cardboard boxes
> used gift wrap
> colourful scrap paper
> used calendar pages

It was easy to create the notes the night before while pre-packing foods that did not require cooling. The calendar was checked and the notes written. The notes were very brief and never much larger than a simple business card. Markers in different colours were used each time to keep each card unique and eye-catching. A good supply of these blank notes were left at the kitchen desk for quick accessibility.

Missing those days...

This is actually only one of hundreds of fun routines that I thoroughly enjoyed over the years with my kids. At ages 23 and 24, I might not be packing lunches for my kids now, but I sure would like to send them little notes at this moment... but, e-mails with bunny videos might have to suffice... for now.
