+ SPEAKING OF SIESTAS!
{ Pictured: Ulysses resting from his little kitty journey. DeNitto © 2006 } A siesta /siːˈɛstə/, original Spanish pronunciation [ˈsjesta] is a short nap taken in the early afternoon, often after the midday meal. Such a period of sleep is a common tradition in some hot countries. The word siesta is Spanish, from the Latin hora sexta - "the sixth hour" (counting from dawn, therefore noon, hence "midday rest").At SPM the true definition is taken a bit further. If a nap is not possible, but there is enough time allowed for any other type of break, it is strongly encouraged to take advantage of that precious moment. As long as the mind and body can rest for a short period as often as possible during the work week, it can only enhance the quality of living.
Each month, learn more facts about SIESTAS and how you may benefit from taking them into your daily routine.

In reference to small apartment spaces in New York City, mobility can be most helpful. If sharing a bathroom with a roommate, here is a great find for times when there may need to be a sign on the door stating "occuped"...

+ TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS
ORGANIZING YOUR VEHICLE
A new year is a fine time to adjust to new ideas for keeping organized on the go!
There are simple solutions to have what you need in your vehicle that don't require much effort or space. See a few tips below:
> Keep a vinyl pouch between driver seat and middle console to store discount slips or sale papers for products and services so that you won't miss saving money when running errands or shopping. You can also keep those plastic store discount cards in a vinyl business card page to lessen the load in your wallet.
> You can easily stash 3-6 collapsable fabric cubes in your trunk or behind the driver's seat for use when grocery shopping to keep groceries from toppling over while driving.
> If using the "green" grocery bags now commonly provided by most grocers, once bags are unloaded in kitchen, you can clip them together with a large binder clip and return them together to the trunk or behind driver's seat for quick and easy access for every grocery trip.
> It's a good idea to keep antibacterial wipes in a middle console or other easily accessible spot of the car so that after touching gasoline pump nossels, shopping carts or door handles, you may try to avoid germs left in these common areas.
> Always keep a roll of paper towels in your trunk for the spill you were not expecting.
> It is helpful to have a tarp in the trunk in case you need to transport something wet or that has the potential of creating a mess in your trunk, such as from a plant or holiday tree purchase.

+ MOM TIME
FORWARD: A note from SPM MOM...
During the early 1990's, as a mother raising two children through their first years, I now learn of many new products that are thrilling to me, even with my empty nest. I often find myself wishing that some of them were available 22 years ago. Below are neat links and ideas to products or educational items currently on today's market for parents to explore for their children-- babies through college students!
EXPLAINING THE IDEA OF ORGANIZING TO YOUNG CHILDREN
If a parent can make chores fun and rewarding, it doesn't quite seem like work...
When explaining the concept of organizing with children, even young ones can be receptive, particularly if there is any notion that it can be a fun game of sorts.
Parents can be creative in starting up a challenge game for sorting, for example.
Even toddlers can begin to grasp the concept of grouping blocks and sorting them into specific bins and find it satisfying.
Make organizing for children even more fun by involving them to design labels for bins with drawings, photos or words to describe what each bin should hold.
Parents can also create charts for chores with organizing listed where rewards are given out for neatest shelf or most tidy toy bins or art supply caddies.
As children grow older, they can also participate in other organizing projects that are more family related, like grouping grocery coupons or categorizing photographs.
As with many other areas of parenting, discipling children to honor their work and keeping the work light in the beginning will keep stress to a minimum and allow them to not only understand the importance of keeping organized, but also assure them that it can be fun.
